Despite it’s massive growth in popularity, influencer marketing still seems to get on people’s nerves. Particularly when talking about influencers themselves (just check out the reaction to our feature on The Daily Mail).
The general consensus from those who don’t really understand influencers, is that it’s not a real career and that they simply ‘do nothing but take photos of themselves all day’. Well sorry Debra, that’s not the case.
Influencers – both micro and macro – are incredibly hard workers. It takes skill, time and commitment to not only produce incredible content, but to develop, grow and maintain a community. There’s comments to respond to, emails to send, events to attend, publicity to pursue. It also takes incredible perserverance – it’s a long term game becoming an influencer and many are doing it alongside their main job.
But do the naysayers have a point? Can you actually make a career as an influencer?
The answer is; yes and no.
You can make a very comfortable living off your social media following with your main income as sponsored posts or other brand partnerships. There’s no denying that – there are thousands of people who are living this reality right now.
But this is only part of the picture: almost all successful influencers have either launched a career off the back of their social media status, or have used their social media status to further their already-chosen career or business.
And this is what we teach in The Influencer:
Use your influencer status to build a career and not make it the career itself.
If you want to be a SUCCESSFUL, top of your industry, highly sought after [insert profession of choice]. then you need to position yourself as an influencer.
“But why can’t I just climb the corporate ladder?” I hear you say. Well, if you didn’t need to build a strong personal brand, then LinkedIn wouldn’t exist. So regardless of industry, if you want to go to the top, then go big on social media.
Obviously it’s more than having followers. It’s about the full strategic plan behind the scenes. We take you through this process in depth in The Influencer program but for now ask yourself these questions:
- What do I want to be known for?
- What would be my ultimate job/career/business?
- What do I love to do more than anything in the world?
- What are my strengths/skills?
Answer them, and you’ve made the first step. Join the program to complete the full journey and build yourself a career or business of your dreams.
